This pool in Orange County had the highest Cyanuric Acid (CYA) numbers that I had seen to date - about 650 parts per million (ppm). Purple stains developed in the spa due to excess CYA and copper in the water. The calcium levels were also extremely high at 1400 ppm.
Reverse Osmosis Pool Water Purification fixed these problems and made the pool water more pure than tap water in about 9 hours.
Cyanuric Acid is a crucial part of healthy pool water chemistry because it protects the chlorine from damaging UV rays. It helps the chlorine last longer and be more effective. However, it has to be in the correct range.
High CYA will cause a multitude of problems. The most common issue is algae growth because high levels of cyanuric acid slow down chlorine’s effectiveness and the algae grows faster than the chlorine can kill it. This pool wasn’t struggling with algae as much as expected, however, cyanuric acid levels in this range are actually unsafe. The pool is not sanitary because the chlorine doesn’t work well and this amount of CYA is also a toxin for swimmers.
CYA typically gets too high in pools due to chlorine stabilizer accumulating over many years. The traditional way to lower CYA is by draining the pool and refilling it with new tap water. However, we used Reverse Osmosis Pool Water Purification and had better results than a pool drain while saving about 80% of the pool water.
We gave this pool a fresh start by lowering the CYA by 88% and the calcium by 99%!
The homeowner was thrilled with the results! Now her pool is safer, easier to maintain, more pleasant to swim in, and requires less chemicals to keep the water chemistry in balance. A win-win!
