Extending the life of pool equipment should be a priority for any homeowner.
The equipment is costly not only to purchase, but also to install. Additionally, it can cause all sorts of frustrating and expensive pool problems if it isn’t working properly.
The issue is how to do this. Many homeowners think that they are taking good care of their pool only to be stunned to find that a new heater is corroding or a salt cell has scaled over. Why?
It all comes down to the vicious downward cycle of impure water.
The dirtier or more chemically off-balance your pool water becomes, the more chemicals you must add to the water to compensate. Unfortunately, the more chemicals you add, the more impure your water becomes which further perpetuates the problem.
This creates a lose-lose circumstance for homeowners. This situation is filled with frequent, costly chemicals and treatments that only partially remedy a deteriorating problem. Pool equipment is often a casualty of this cycle because the excess chemicals in the pool water cause scale and corrosion.
To halt the cycle, you need to remove the impurities from your pool water.
The key to strong water quality and long-lasting pool equipment is reverse osmosis (RO) pool water purification. In about 24 hours, this process typically removes chemicals in the water by 75-100%. This fresh pool water protects and extends the life of your pool equipment while preventing many other pool-chemistry-based problems.
How Reverse Osmosis Purifies Pool Water
While reverse osmosis might sound unfamiliar to you, we can almost guarantee that you’ve benefited from it before! It’s the technology that keeps our tap water clean and pure. Large desalination plants and public water district facilities utilize reverse osmosis to remove salt, minerals and contaminants from water before it goes to our pipes.
At California Pool Co., we have a smaller version of this same technology in a trailer that we bring to your house to use on your pool water!
Think of it as a type of special filter. We send the water through a series of semi-permeable membranes that essentially clean the individual water molecules.
This removes hundreds of micro-contaminants and excess chemicals that previously could only be removed by the expensive method of draining and refilling the pool with fresh tap water. However, our reverse osmosis process is actually more effective than draining the pool. We make your pool water purer than local tap water!

Why Purer Water Extends Pool Equipment Life
Water with higher purity requires less chlorine and chemicals to keep it clean.
We want the least amount of pool chemicals in your pool as possible because each chemical has certain materials that it scales or corrodes when out of balance. This means that your pool equipment is in graver danger the more chemically saturated your pool water becomes.
For example, “aggressive” water will corrode metals and etch pool finsihes. This means that it is either:
- low in temperature
- high in salt
- high in cyanuric acid (CYA)
- low in calcium
- low in PH
- a combination of any of these
The water will eat away at metals in the pool heater, salt cell, hand railing, ladder, and light rings. High levels of chlorine are also aggressive, but will corrode plastic, such as parts of your pump or PVC pipes.
The water will become scale forming if the chemical levels are out of balance in the opposite direction:
- high in temperature
- high in PH
- high in alkalinity
- high in calcium
This means the water will degrade the pool equipment by creating white scale on it. These excess elements will build up on the salt cell, pool pump, concrete, pool tile and grout.
Either side of the extreme causes damage.
Pool water needs to be balanced in the middle of these two spectrums to extend the life of pool equipment and prevent many other problems. The scale that measures this is called the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI).
The older the water is, the more difficult it is to achieve the LSI balance. Water oversaturated with chemicals becomes a compounding problem. More chemicals are required to “balance” the pool chemistry, but the chemicals become less effective the more you add.
For this reason, homeowners will fight the existing pool chemicals and pay extra to do it until they start with purer pool water. They will repetitively attempt to fix stains, scales and algae problems while the worsening water chemistry slowly destroys their pool equipment.
Our cost-effective reverse osmosis pool water purification will fix this by removing 75-100% of impurities and clean your water to drinking standards! This will stop the growing cycle of problems in your pool, require less chemical maintenance and extend the life of your pool equipment.
